Trip to Mt Gemi, The Monkey Sanctuary and Kulugu and Wli Waterfalls

Am I officially a travel blogger? Nah, I just like to see new places and experience new things.

So the second half of the year has been good. I’ve been able to travel to different places like Singapore and Dubai and also see local attractions like Cape Three Points.

This time, I took a trip to the Volta region, courtesy of the good people of Ghana Akwantuo.

On this trip, we headed towards the town of Amedozfe, where we got to hike up Mt Gemi and explored Kulugu falls. On the second day, we explored the Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary and Wli Waterfalls.

So without further ago, here’s how the trip went:

Day 1

We officially set off from Accra at 5:00 am…er, I mean 6:00am. We set off towards Amedozfe and made a stop at the bridge near Sokpoe.

I love road trips in cars until my legs start to fall asleep and I start to get uncomfortable. But at least the scenery from the outside helps to keep my mind distracted.

Soon enough, we got to our first stop. The town of Amedozfe.

Our first attraction was Mountain Gbemi.

From the picture above, the hike to the top of the mountain was about an hour. It’s been a while since I went hiking. It was definitely a nice adrenaline rush and great exercise for the legs 😅

The view at the top was amazing. Trying to capture landscapes once you hike up a mountain is almost impossible to fully capture on camera. You would have to be there to experience it for yourself.

The Mt. Gbemi cross is the main attraction when you hit the mountain top.

You can see more pictures and panoramas of the views at the top of the mountain in the picture album link at the bottom of this post.

Later That Day….

So after the mountain hike and taking a little rest and relaxation at the Mountain Paradise lodge, we decided to take a walk* to the Kulugu falls.

*(Surprise, surprise. It turned out to be a long hike combined with a little bit of rock climbing)

I would love to show you the ropes we had to hold on to while hiking towards the waterfall as well as the rocks we had to descend. But instead, here’s what was waiting once we finally reached our destination:

On the hike back to the lodge, it started to rain. So year…that was..dangerous..and fun 😅

Day 2

After trying to sleep and relax all the muscles I didn’t know I had in my legs, we set off for the first stop at the Monkey Sanctuary.

OMG! The monkeys are so cute!

Above spending some time with our monkey friends, we got back on our trip and headed towards our final stop at Wli Waterfalls.

Wli Waterfall

So we had another hike to the waterfall. It was 40+ min walk (This was officially the most exercise I’ve had in months! Lol).

But it was definitely worth it.

I love finding gems like these. Again, these pictures don’t fully capture the experience. You would have to be there to soak up (literally) everything.

It’s kind of a shame that there is a #YearOfReturn initiative happening but because it’s December, most of the activities are based in Accra. Maybe next time, there should be mass tourist groups heading to places like this.

We have so much here but Ghana sucks at advertising it’s unique features and landscapes. People would kill for experiences like this.

At least I’m getting to experience these.

Looking forward to next year to explore more places both within Ghana and outside the country as well.

If you have a chance and are not afraid of a little hiking and getting your hands and feet dirty, take a trip to the Volta Region and explore.
