Books, Movies, and TV shows I explored in 2021

2021 has been a good year (I’m still alive!) and that’s a win for me in a year that seemed to get better after what happened in 2020. There’s always ups and downs but overall, life was good and now the year 2021 is coming to a close.

To mark the end of the year, I decided to collate some data on how my life’s been going. So here’s how my 2021 went:

Books

This year, I decided to up my ante and read more books this year even I’m juggling multiple things. I set my reading challenge at 7 books and I passed that goal and read 10 books. The previous year was 7 books.

So what books did I read this year?

  • Contagious: Why Things Catch On — Jonah Berger
  • Boys & Sex: Young Men on Hookups, Love, Porn, Consent, and Navigating the New Masculinity — Peggy Orenstein
  • Press Reset: Ruin and Recovery in the Video Game Industry — Jason Schreier
  • Liftoff: Elon Musk and the Desperate Early Days That Launched SpaceX — Eric Berger
  • How to Avoid a Climate Disaster: The Solutions We Have and the Breakthroughs We Need — Bill Gates
  • The End of Gender: Debunking the Myths about Sex and Identity in Our Society — Debra Soh
  • Everybody Lies: Big Data, New Data, and What the Internet Can Tell Us About Who We Really Are — Seth Stephens-Davidowitz
  • Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made — Jason Schreier
  • Broken (in the best possible way) — Jenny Lawson

I’m still reading a couple of books (Yes, I read more than one book at a time because I’m weird lol).

We’ll see how many books I can read next year.

Tech Nova

My online tech news publication, Tech Nova, did well this year. We had a small slow down in the middle of the year but picked it in the later part of 2021.

We’ve published 361 articles and counting in 2021. We crossed the milestone of 1000 followers on Instagram and 2000 followers on Twitter.

We didn’t do as well compared to last year when we looked at 2020 numbers. Last year we had about 61,000 unique visitors to the website. Currently, we’re doing half those numbers. We have about 35,000 unique visitors and we’re on pace to have about 40,000.

That’s not too bad considering we’re relying mostly on SEO and social media (Twitter and Instagram).

Next year, we hope as we push out more interactive content include Twitter Spaces, we’ll pick up more viewership and numbers.

Life Stats

Ok, thanks to the power of technology, I’m able to measure certain facts about my life including my sleep and movement and activity.

For sleep, I averaged about 6 hours of sleep throughout the year which is pretty good. Next year, I hope to get that number about to 7 hours.

For walking, I’ve taken 1,075,437 steps which is equal to about 847.81 km

Fun fact: The distance from Accra to Lagos is 488 km which means, I could basically walk to Lagos and back with all the steps I took this year.

Movies

At the time of writing this, I’ve officially watched 90 movies this year. All the movies I’ve watched are ones that I hadn’t previously seen.

I did the math on how many hours of movies I’ve watched and it’s so interesting:

Let’s assume that the average movie is 1hr 30 mins (90mins), then we calculate 90 movies x 90 mins, I’ve consumed 8100 mins of movie content. Convert that into hours = 135 hours.

So that’s about 5 days worth of movies if I sat down and watched continuously.

Most of the movies included the Marvel movies, Sound Of Metal, Quiet Place 2 and many, many, more.

TV Shows

This year I’ve watched 50 TV shows. These shows are complete seasons of new shows or continued shows from the this year of the previous year.

Again, I did the math on how much time I spend watching all these shows.

If we assume that the average TV show season is 10 episodes and each episodes averages about 1hr (60min):

1 season of a TV shows = 10 x 60 = 600 mins in a season — 10 hours for one season.

Therefore if one TV show is 10 hours, 50 TV shows = 500 hours (!) of watched content.

Some of my favorite TV shows in 2021 were:

  • Arcane
  • Demon Slayer
  • Squid Game
  • Star Wars Visions and a lot more

The year is not over but burnout is kicking my ass and I don’t think I’ll have the energy to post this later in December.
