Taking A Trip To Cape Three Points

Taking a chance on new experiences

I decided to go on this trip on a whim….

A couple of months ago, I took a break and traveled to Singapore and Dubai after months of saving. After that trip, I’ve adopted a new mindset to want to have more “experiences” like that.

Whatever any “experience” comes my way looks interesting, I’m willing to jump headfirst to see what it’s all about.

So when this poster came across my social media feed, it caught my eye…

Scuba Diving? Snorkeling? Whale spotting? Count me in!

It looked like something interesting to do on a holiday weekend. But I was apprehensive at first. Sleeping in on a weekend sounds more “relaxing” than getting in a vehicle and traveling to a place I’ve never been to.

But I booted my anxiety away and decided “Why not” and went ahead and signed up.

And I’m glad I did.

Road Trip!

The destination was at Cape Three Points in the Western Region of Ghana. Funny enough, I hadn’t been to the Western Region before. I’ve visited all regions in Ghana except this one. So at the moment, I can say that I’ve visited all regions in Ghana 🎉

Getting out of Accra always seems like a relief. The air quality improves, the traffic is less and overall, it’s just a good feeling. Passing through places like Cape Coast and seeing the coastline with all the greenery always brings a smile to my face.

Stuck In The Mud

The journey from Accra to Cape Three Points takes approximately 6 hours by car.

We left Accra around 6 am, encountered a little traffic which slowed us down along the way. We then stopped for lunch in Takoradi and got close to our destination around 3pm-ish.

Then we run into a bit of trouble: BAD ROADS.

No scratch that. HORRIBLE ROADS.

One thing Ghana really needs to work on is infrastructure when it comes to destinations to tourist destinations. Long story short, our bus got stuck in our muddy area and could not get out. It was nerve-wracking. And a bit annoying to tell you the truth.

Stuck in the mud

With not many options available, we all had to get off the bus and try to push it out. We all got very muddy and the plan didn’t work.

Eaten up by the road

So our next solution was to tie our bus to a pick-up truck and have it drag our bus out of the mud.

It worked! (The first time). Our bus got stuck several times until we were finally in the clear.

Everybody got muddy

This all took an hour before we got out of this muddy situation.

Is this a road or a mud pit?!

With the road path to our final destination obviously inaccessible, we had to take a detour through a small village.

Lucky for us, we were told that our final destination was basically a 15-minute walk. So we grabbed some of our stuff, put the rest in a 4 x 4 headed in the site and then started our mini-hike.

From Muddy Waters To Serene Atmosphere

It seemed like we were just going from bad to more bad as we started walking towards the destination.

After walking through a small village, we took a path which was like walking through a mini jungle with swarm-like water to boot.

Well, this isn’t fun….

But after going through muddy waters and then walking through swamp-like water, we came out on the other side to serenity….

These pictures don’t do it justice. You have to be there to experience it.

After gawking at the sea and calming environment, we got to our site located close to the Cape Three Points lodge and set up our campsite. (Did I mention that we were camping along the beach area 😬)

Camping by the sea? Awesome!

The next day was waking up to the sea, getting a taste of the peaceful atmosphere and just taking it all in. The whole day was spent at the beach. For the first time in years, I actually waded into the beach water and enjoyed myself. I say that because, for years now, I haven’t really ventured into the water for some reason.

I woke up to this

Hiking To The Lighthouse

On our last day, we decided to hike to a lighthouse in the distance before taking the long trip back to Accra.

Honest to God, if I could spend a week at this place, I would….

The hike to the lighthouse from the beach was about 20 mins, give or take. After paying our little tourism fee of 5 GHC at the “Tourist Service Centre”, we started off to the lighthouse.

Yes, this is real……

I thought the beach area was cool but when we got to the top of the hill to the lighthouse area, the views were more immaculate….

Again, it’s hard to describe and the pictures don’t do it enough justice. But you have to be there to experience it.

It’s so beautiful….

After exploring the lighthouse and the cliffside, it was time to say goodbye to Cape Three Points and it’s serene environment and head back to the busy and overrated city of Accra.

Final Thoughts

Experiences are all that I want now. There is so much to explore that it’s ridiculous and almost inexcusable for me to not take chances to see them.

As someone who is introverted with anxiety, some of the experiences are a bit out of my comfort zone. (OK, a lot out of comfort zone)

But it’s gotten to the point where I think life has more to offer and if I can be in positions to explore more of it, then anxiety be damned.

I’m hoping to take similar trips in the near future. There’s an opportunity to go on a tour of France and Barcelona next year and I think I’m going to take up that chance. I’m going to start saving for that and hopefully get the chance to do that.

But in the interim, I will also be doing more “adventures” if they ever show up and documenting as much as I can.

Cape Three Points is a great destination. If only more infrastructure was put into making it more easier to get to them. I have opinions about the whole #YearOfReturn thing but that’s for another blog post.

Thanks for reading and if I could offer any advice, it’s this: Get out of your comfort zone and explore.
